Pray for Emery

Sam's CHOA heart friend Emery was placed on the transplant list yesterday because her heart was failing.  Less than 24 hours later...at 3 am this morning...they got the call that they had a matching donor for Emery!  I've never heard of a wait shorter than three months!  Needless to say, they are happy, shocked, and scared.  Please  please say prayers for Emery, her family, and her doctors as they will be going into surgery any minute.

You got it!

Can they give children adult hearts, or does the heart have to have a size of scale for a child? I guess a better question is when does the heart, arteries, and veins complete their growth?

That is a great question...I have to research some...I dont think size of the arteries, etc matter, as long as the heart is big enough to handle the amount of blood contained in the body...WHO KNOWS!

We'll be praying for Emery! I can't imagine the overwhelming emotions her family must be going through. Lots of prayers for all of them! And WOW...that's FAST!

I don't think babies can get hearts from adults. I don't know that absolutely, but I'm pretty sure there's a weight range for a donor to be acceptable...I'm assuming because of the size? I could be totally wrong. :)

I was going to leave a message letting you know that you are welcome to pass on our info to Embry's family if they need a resource... but to answer the question in the comment section here, Children have to have a heart that equals their size... there is a weight/height protocol, not so much age. Grace's heart will continue to grow with her as she grows. She can have it for as long as her body doesn't reject it. (The first transplant at CHOA was about 21/22 years ago and that young lady still has it... it has just been growing with her). Grace also had a short wait for her heart, just 12 days, but I can tell you it felt like a life time. I will be saying prayers for Embry, her family and the donor and donor family.
